The Aqara U100 is a smart deadbolt that replaces your existing lock and focuses on one thing: making Apple Home Key work the way it should. After three months of daily use, I can confirm it delivers on that promise better than most competitors in this price range.

Home Key lets you unlock your door by tapping your iPhone or Apple Watch against the lock, no app opening required. It works even when your phone is dead (for up to 5 hours using reserve power). The U100 implements this reliably. I've tested it in rain, during Chicago winter, and with a phone in a thick case. It works.

Installation Reality Check

Installation took me 45 minutes with basic tools. The instructions are clear, but there's a critical measurement you need to verify before buying: your door thickness. The U100 only fits doors between 1.6 and 2.2 inches thick. I've seen multiple returns from people who didn't check this first.

The lock replaces your deadbolt completely. You'll need a Phillips screwdriver and about 30 minutes if you're handy. The trickiest part is aligning the interior and exterior assemblies. Aqara includes alignment guides, but it still took me two attempts to get it perfect.

The lock includes anti-tamper sensors that trigger HomeKit alerts if someone tries to force it. Physical key override is included (two keys shipped). The deadbolt is standard commercial grade, not reinforced. If you're in a high-security situation, you'd want additional measures regardless of smart lock choice.

Home Key uses encrypted NFC communication. Your phone doesn't transmit your actual HomeKit credentials to the lock, it uses a secure element. This is meaningfully more secure than Bluetooth-only smart locks.

Who Should Buy This

Buy the Aqara U100 if you're invested in Apple's ecosystem and want Home Key functionality without spending $329 on the Level Lock+. The fingerprint sensor is a significant convenience advantage over locks that only offer Home Key. If you use your phone and watch for everything anyway, this is the most practical smart lock under $250.

The lock makes sense for single-family homes, condos, or apartments where you're allowed to replace the deadbolt. It's particularly good if you have kids or frequent guests who need access, since you can issue temporary codes through HomeKit.

Who Should Skip This

Skip the U100 if your door thickness is outside the 1.6-2.2 inch range, period. Also skip if you don't already own Apple devices or a HomeKit hub. The Alexa integration isn't good enough to recommend this as an Alexa-primary smart lock.

If you need built-in Wi-Fi for remote access without a separate hub, spend the extra $70 on the Schlage Encode Plus. If invisible installation matters more than fingerprint unlock, the Level Lock+ is worth the premium despite the higher price.

Battery life sensitive users should consider the Level Lock+ instead. Changing batteries twice a year isn't terrible, but it's noticeably more maintenance than competing products.
